Distance learning has been a challenge for all students, but the students in ROC/CTEC's SkillsUSA chapter didn't have time to lament their situation when they learned that many young kids were spending their holiday at the Bakersfield Homeless Center.

It's been years in the making and the crown jewel of the Kern High School District's career education program, if not the district itself, has begun to open its doors.

There are no students in the brand-new Career Technical Education Center, but that won't be true for long.

ROC/CTEC isn't letting a few miles stand in the way of career training, and that point was punctuated when a student sent us a quick video on how she is putting her lessons to delicious ends.

After almost 2 1/2 years, the Career Technical Education Center is nearing completion. It'll take some time for students to get the hands-on learning they're used to — the district will begin the school year in a virtual format on Aug. 24 — but once they return, students will have access to some of the latest technology, gadgets and other equipment used in their industries.

The Kern High School District’s (KHSD) annual event Promoting Excellence in Academics and Activities (PEAAK) Awards was held virtually this year. While the ceremony looked a little different, the students still received the incredible honor of being named the “Best of the Best” in the KHSD, in a number of categories.
