Program Description

Providing a solid foundation for future educators to build upon is our way to help solve California's teacher shortage. Careers in Education allows students to discover opportunities available in teaching and other school site professions working with Kindergarten to grade 12. This program offers an introduction to the issues and strategies for teaching diverse learners.

 

This one-year program offers students the opportunity to intern during the second semester in an elementary or junior high classroom under the guidance of a supervising teacher. Prerequisites for the internship include successful completion of the first-semester curriculum "C" or higher, regular attendance, and exemplary behavior.

 

Please Note: Students are required to wear a "Student Intern" polo during internship, Students are able to fundraise, and are provided at least one polo. Student may purchase more polos if desired.

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION OPPORTUNITIES

Certifications offered to students completing the Careers in Education program include:

  • CPR and First Aid certification
  • Playground and Classroom Safety- Keenan/Sisk Schools Certificate
  • Child Development Assistant Permit through CDE (school-age emphasis) for eligible students)
  • California Department of Social Services (CDSS) Mandated Reporter 
  • California Department of Pesticide Regulations – Pest Management in the Schools and Child Care Settings  DPR-101
  • Food Handling Certificate
  • Opportunity to take Paraprofessional Exam at the end of the year. Must pass 3 sections 80% or above.

 

PRE-REQUISITES

Careers in Education students should have average or better skills in reading and writing and a solid attendance record.

 

HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT AVAILABLE

Students earn 15 general elective units each semester toward their high school graduation.

 

College prep course.  A-G approved.  Meets area “G” approval for UC and CSU admissions.

 

Articulated Credit- Bakersfield College B21 Birth- Adolescent Child Development- 3 Units- Students must earn an A or B in the first semester, and pass the final with an 80% or higher to earn the units for this course.

This is a career awareness class that instructs students on the basics necessary for entry-level employment and college course requirements. Successful Careers in Education students often pursue careers in the following:
