Introduction to Skilled Trades

Program Description

Introduction to Skilled Trades courses are designed for students interested in exploring multiple career pathways within the trades industry. Students will gain hands-on experience in a variety of skilled trade areas, including construction, welding, automotive technology, and electrical systems. The program provides foundational skills in tool use, safety, measurement, and blueprint reading while introducing students to industry standards and expectations across the trades.

 

Through this course, students will also have the opportunity to develop essential employability skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, all critical for success in any technical career.


Juniors who successfully complete the course will be given priority enrollment the following year for advanced training in ROC programs such as Construction Trades, Welding, Automotive Technology, Automotive Collision and Refinishing Technology or Ag Diesel Mechanics.

INTRODUCTION TO SKILLED TRADES STUDENTS LEARN:

  • Construction fundamentals: measuring, cutting, framing, and finishing
  • Welding basics: safety, metal identification, and MIG/TIG fundamentals
  • Automotive principles: tool identification, basic maintenance, and system overview
  • Electrical fundamentals: circuits, wiring, and troubleshooting basics
  • Workplace safety and tool use
  • Teamwork, project planning, and employability skills.
 

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION OPPORTUNITIES:

ROC certifications offered to students completing the Introduction to Skilled Trades program include:

  • OSHA 10
  • S/P2 Safety Certifications
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
 

THINGS TO CONSIDER:

Introduction to Skilled Trades students

  • Dress code includes closed-toe shoes (preferably work boots) and jeans/canvas-style pants.
  • This class is physically active and involves working in shop environments.
  • Cell phone use is not permitted during class time.
 

HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT AVAILABLE:

Students earn 15 elective units each semester toward their high school graduation.

College prep course. A-G approved. Meets area “G” approval for UC and CSU admissions.

This is a career awareness class that instructs students on the basics necessary for entry-level employment. Successful Introduction to Skilled Trades students often pursue careers in the following:

  • Industrial Maintenance Technician
