Program Description
The CTEC Medical Assistant course provides students with a well-rounded education in medical terminology, ethics, and communication—key elements for successful patient interaction and a thorough understanding of the medical environment. The program integrates classroom learning with practical internships at local medical offices, offering students the chance to apply their skills in real-world contexts.
CREDIT AVAILABLE:
Meets area “G” approval for UC and CSU admissions
10 high school elective credits per semester
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
Dress Code is black scrubs. Students are responsible for their own transportation during the Community Classroom (internship) portion of the program. Clinical internships are available in the Bakersfield area only and sites are selected by the teacher. Before participating, all students must submit their immunization records, proof of a recent flu vaccine, and either a negative TB test or chest x-ray. While the COVID vaccine is recommended, these requirements may change based on industry standards and training site policies.
STUDENTS LEARN:
- Medication calculation, medication administration, and injection administration
- Assisting with physical exams, minor surgeries and procedures
- Completion of different laboratory procedures
- Taking vital signs, checking weight, and height
