What is Work Based Learning (WBL)?

“By narrowing the gap between theory and practice, Work–Based Learning (WBL) creates meaning for students. WBL provides opportunities for students to learn a variety of skills through rigorous academic preparation with hands-on career development experiences .”  – USOE

WBL, along with Project Based Learning and the more traditional learning modalities, are important components of Career Technical Education (CTE). CTE aims to prepare students for the world of work by introducing them to workplace competencies, and makes academic content accessible to students by providing it in a hands-on context. Think of CTE as the former VocEd shop classes, but reimagined for the 21st century workplace.

How Can the Business Community Support WBL?

The Kern  High School District is actively seeking input from local business people wishing to lend their expertise and knowledge to help us better prepare tomorrow’s workforce. From time to time, this guidance might be in the form of:

• Directly engaging with students in the classroom and at the businessperson’s place of work.
• Meeting with teachers to align curriculum with current industry standards and practices.
• Advising school administrators through the program design and development process.
• And, of course, becoming an advocate for Career Technical Education within one’s industry and one’s sphere of influence.

In short, by partnering with the district’s CTE Work Based Learning initiatives, you can have a direct impact on improving the local entry-level job applicant pool by giving students the technical skills and work maturity necessary to succeed.
