ROC Student Wins State Scholarship Competition
Combining raw talent and sheer ambition, a student at the Regional Occupational Center (ROC/CTEC) is making a name for himself in the industry he loves.
Erubiel Monterrosa Romero was recently recognized as the 1st place winner of the “Districts Make the Difference” statewide video competition highlighting California’s special districts. Special districts are services including water, energy, public safety and fire protection. The contest called for producing a sixty-second video educating the public on the importance of our local special districts.
In November, he was notified that his video was one of the top 5 in California. At that point, the public was invited and encouraged to vote for their favorite video posted on the “Districts Make the Difference” website. When the call came in that his Special Districts project garnered the most votes, he was ecstatic, and rightfully so. This award also earned him a $2,000.00 scholarship.
“I knew I wanted to use drone footage, have strong narration, and get really creative with the titles and effects while editing. I had to do a lot of research on our local special districts, then organize a travel plan to reach the individual sites so I could shoot at sunset capturing a softer, cinematic quality for the project,” Monterrosa Romero said, when asked about his vision for the project.
He completed the ROC CTEC Video Production program in the 2018-2019 school year and is currently enrolled in the Mobile App Development (MADE) program. He credits his success to the technical and interpersonal skills he is learning at ROC/CTEC.
