ROC SkillsUSA rocks state competition

88 Kern High ROC students, each of whom qualified in regional competitions earlier in the year, represented our community and their respective schools. In all, Regional Occupational Center (ROC) had students from 10 of its programs participate.

Over 100 different trade, technical, and leadership events are held under the SkillsUSA banner, with KHSD students competing in skill fields as varied as Entrepreneurship to Law Enforcement. Scores of other students competed in leadership competitions, including Community Service, American Spirit, and Extemporaneous Speaking.

Despite stiff competition from throughout the state, KHSD students stood tall, Erin Hodson (Advisor) earned the California SkillsUSA Advisor of the Year and was placed as a Board member for the 2019/2020 school year. BHS senior and ROC student Cassie Short was elected as a California SkillsUSA State Officer. Individual students also excelled, with KHSD students earning 16 gold, 2 silver, and 5 bronze medals.  In addition, 7 gold medal winners have qualified for the national competition, to be held this June in Louisville, KY.

SkillsUSA is a national organization consisting of 330,000 high school and college students. With assistance from industry, trade associations, and labor organizations, SkillsUSA endeavors to provide students with the technical skills and leadership abilities necessary to succeed in today’s ever-changing workplace.
