Cosmetology
Program Description
Imagine having a fun, high-paying job that lets you use your creativity to make people look good! Your dream of becoming a licensed cosmetologist is just about to come true. Learn to provide beauty services, such as shampooing, cutting, coloring, and styling hair, and massaging and treating the scalp. You'll also learn to provide nail and skin care services, as well as client safety, hygiene, and customer relations.
Training to become a manicurist, esthetician, and hairstylist are all included in this 1080-hour program that is aligned to the state Cosmetology Board requirements. Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the State Cosmetology Board Licensing Exam.
Program details:
- During the regular school year, students will have a 6-hour instructional day from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm (which also includes a 90-minute lunch break from 10:30 am to noon).
- Students will need to take any additional courses they need to graduate high school through the Kern Learn program (online program located at ROC).
Participating in this program is a huge time commitment on the part of the student, but it is a tremendous training opportunity to have. Students will be trained in all aspects of the industry and be prepared to enter the workforce as entry-level licensed cosmetologists upon successfully completing the program.
IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
- Students may only miss a total of 10 days or 60 hours (including graduation activities) to meet the minimum California State Board of Cosmetology hour requirement for a cosmetology course.
- To receive a completion certificate from ROC and to sit for the California State Board licensing exam, students must: (1) Meet the state board hours requirement, (2) Have completed and passed all units and competencies given during the Cosmetology course, and (3) Have a valid California I.D. or Driver's License by the second semester.
- Cosmetology curriculum has a heavy online component and is a very vigorous program. Students will complete chapter work and other assignments using several learning online platforms.
- Students will need to take 4 additional courses to graduate high school through the Kern Learn program (our online high school located on our campus). This averages 4 hours of additional class/homework time after school each day.
- No phones or electronic devices except ROC Chromebooks are allowed during class or on the salon floor without instructor approval.
COSMETOLOGY STUDENTS LEARN:
- Professional hair care, including shampooing, cutting, coloring and styling
- Scalp care including massaging and treatment
- Manicure and esthetician skills
- Customer service techniques
- Employment readiness skills
PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION OPPORTUNITIES
Certifications offered to students completing the Cosmetology program include:
- Eligibility to sit for the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology state licensing exam (fee required)
PRE-REQUISITES
Cosmetology students should have solid communication skills and average or better math and writing skills. Students must have an interest in working with the public and within the industry. Dress code must be followed - no outside t-shirts, shirts/sweatshirts with logos (other than ROC t-shirts) are allowed on the salon floor. Name badge to be worn at all times.
HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT AVAILABLE
Students earn 20 units of elective credit each semester toward their high school graduation.
College prep course. A-G approved. Meets area “G” approval for UC and CSU admissions.
