Welding
Program Description
With Kern County’s emphasis on oil, agriculture, and manufacturing careers, welding is a high-demand job skill that will benefit you for years to come. ROC’s highly-regarded welding programs teach you basic welding techniques and worksite safety during their first semester. Then, during their second-semester students build on their skills, applying the basic principles of cutting, grinding, and welding various metals using ARC, MIG, and TIG welding processes. Instruction in shop discipline and safety practices are emphasized throughout.
WELDING STUDENTS LEARN:
- Industry terminology and use of basic tools
- Cutting and grinding
- Bonding metals using the ARC process
- Shop procedures, including safety practices, shop discipline, and cleaning/maintenance
PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION OPPORTUNITIES
Certifications offered to students completing the Welding course include:
- AWS D1.1
- F.C.A.W. welding process
- S.M.A.W. welding process
- ASME Sec.9 Pipe Test
HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT AVAILABLE
Students earn 15 elective units each semester toward their high school graduation.
College prep course. A-G approved. Meets area “G” approval for UC and CSU admissions.
BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE CREDIT AVAILABLE
Welding and Metal Fabrication is articulated with Bakersfield College courses in:
WELD B1b – Introduction to Welding Processes (2 units)
Students meeting BC’s established criteria can earn up to 6 units of BC credit in addition to the above high school credit.
CAREER PATHWAYS AND RELATED OCCUPATIONS
This is a career awareness class that instructs students on the basics necessary for entry-level employment. Successful Welding & Metal Fabrication students oftentimes pursue careers in the following:

- Welder
- Welder Mechanic
- Maintenance Welder
- Construction Welder
- Pipe Welder
