Program Description

When a customer comes to the pharmacy, they are more than likely ill with some sort of disease state. As a pharmacy technician, one must be extraordinarily compassionate, knowledgeable of the illnesses that are associated with the top 200 medications and be as accurate as they are amiable.

CTEC’s Pharmacy Technician program is a one-year course.  During the second semester of the program, some students may have the opportunity to serve an internship at a local pharmacy.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN STUDENTS LEARN:

• Basic safety and standards.
• Communication and customer service.
• Introductions to pharmacology (including drug classifications, pharmaceutical calculations and measurements).
• Pharmacy laws, regulatory agencies and ethics.
• Body Systems and Introductions to Pharmacokinetics.
• Sterile and Non-sterile compounding.
• Processing and handling of medications and medication orders.
• Procurement, billing, reimbursement, and inventory management.

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION OPPORTUNITIES

Designations offered to students completing the Pharmacy Technician program include:

• Pharmacy Technician Certificate of Completion
• CPR Certification
• HIPAA Certification (CSUB Pharmacy Program Certification)
• Preparatory training to obtain a California Pharmacy Technician state license
• Preparatory training to obtain PTCB National Pharmacy Certification

ENROLLMENT PREREQUISITES

Pharmacy Technician students should be proficient in reading and writing comprehension skills. Math skills must include the ability to multiply and divide fractions and basic mathematical conversions.

In order to be considered for a second-semester internship, students must be at least 18 years of age at time of internship, have a social security number, obtain fingerprint clearance through the Department of Justice, and pass a drug test.

HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT AVAILABLE

Students earn 15 general elective units each semester toward their high school graduation.

College prep course.  A-G approved.  Meets area “G” approval for UC and CSU admissions.
