Program Description

Law enforcement officers are our front line of defense against the criminal element in society. This course is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of the criminal justice system and essential skills in maintaining public safety. Covering a range of topics, students will explore the complexity of law enforcement, gaining practical knowledge and hands-on experience in various aspects of the field. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to explore involvement with cadet programs for BPD, KCSO or California Highway Patrol.

      • Ride Along with BPD – Student must pass criminal background check.

PRE-REQUISITES

      • Sport physical required prior to beginning course – Free sports physical offered at any Priority Urgent Care facility when accompanied by the Kern High School District sports physical form - To print form, click above.
      •  Agree to Policy and Procedure Manual (Industry Standards) – To view document, click link above.
      • Proficient reading and writing abilities.
      • Strong verbal communication skills.
      • Consistent attendance (Daytime students = 13 absences allowed. Evening students = 7 absences allowed).

 

HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT AVAILABLE

10 elective and 5 CP English credits per semester or 15 elective credits per semester.

College prep course. A-G approved. Meets area “G” approval for UC and CSU admissions.

BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE CREDIT AVAILABLE

  • CRIM B1 Introduction to Criminal Justice - 3 Units (fall semester only)
  • CRIM B5 Community Relations - 3 Units (spring semester only)
  • CRIM B9 The Juvenile Justice System - 3 Units (spring semester only)
  • CPR/First Aid .5 units (fall semester only)
 

ADDITIONAL COLLEGE CREDITS

Cerro Coso Community College credit is available for students completing the following Controlled Response Institute (CRI) courses offered through the program:
  • Basic Weaponless Defense (.5 units)
  • Basic Baton (.5 units)
  • Introduction to Criminal Street Gangs (.5 units)
  • De-escalation (.5 units)
 

CAREER PATHWAYS AND RELATED OCCUPATIONS

This is a career awareness class that instructs students on the basics necessary for entry-level employment. Successful law enforcement students often purse careers in the following:
  • Police Officer/Deputy Sheriff
  • Police Dispatcher
  • Police Service Technician/Community Service Technician
  • Corrections
  • Probation Officer
  • Military Careers
 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

DRESS CODE: Physical training attire EXAMPLE – black shorts, plain white t-shirt and running shoes. Please refer to the link above for additional policies and procedures (industry standards) of the classroom.
 
WORKOUT EXAMPLES: The following workout activities are examples of what is expected of each student.
  • Extensive cardio/running sessions.
  • Weightlifting routines
  • Obstacle courses
  • Body weight exercises (push-ups, pull-ups, squats, lunges, etc.)
  • Agility drills, including jumping a six-foot wall and fence.
  • Dragging a 165-pound dummy to simulate real-life scenarios.
