Introduction to Health Careers

Program Description

Introduction to Health Careers courses are designed for students interested in pursuing a healthcare pathway.  Students will learn about all of the career exploration in allied health. Students will also have an opportunity to earn dual enrollment college credit for Medical Terminology and Introduction to Health Science Pathways through this course. Both courses are required college courses for all allied health programs.
 
Juniors who successfully complete the course will be given priority enrollment the following year for advanced training in any of the CTEC allied health programs, including Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Dental Assistant, or Sports Medicine.

INTRODUCTION TO HEALTH CAREER STUDENTS LEARN:

  • Accurately perform Vital Signs
  • HIPAA Compliance training
  • CPR and First Aid
  • History and trends in healthcare
  • Legal and ethical responsibilities
  • Complete a resume and job application.
 

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION OPPORTUNITIES

CTEC certifications offered to students completing the Introduction to Health Careers program include:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
  • CTEC Certificate of Completion
 

PRE-REQUISITES

Introduction to Health Careers students should have average or better math, science, and English skills and solid attendance. The program dress code includes wearing a specified uniform (scrubs) on assigned days.


HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT AVAILABLE

Students earn 15 elective units each semester toward their high school graduation.

College prep course. A-G approved. Meets area “G” approval for UC and CSU admissions.


BAKERSFIELD COLLEGE CREDIT AVAILABLE

Introduction to Health Careers is articulated with Bakersfield College courses in:

  • MEDS B60 – Medical Terminology

Students meeting BC’s established criteria can earn up to 3 units of BC credit in addition to the above high school credit.


CAREER PATHWAYS AND RELATED OCCUPATIONS

This is a career awareness class that instructs students on the basics necessary for entry-level employment. Successful Introduction to Health Career students often pursue careers in the following:

  • Nursing Assistant
  • Medical Assistant
  • Dental Assistant
  • Physical Therapy Aide
  • Medical Receptionist
  • Pharmacy Technician
