Program Description

Are you a Gear Head? Do you love cars? Maybe a career in Auto Technology is for you! Students will be exposed to the automotive business and provided the opportunity to learn entry-level job skills.

ROC Auto Technology is a NATEF certified advanced program for students seeking specialized training designed to meet standards set by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

This two semester program will prepare you for entry level automotive related jobs. During the second semester, you may qualify to receive on-the-job training through internships at a local auto repair shop.

Auto Technology students learn:

• Engine repair and light maintenance
• Automatic trans/transaxle
• Manual drive train and axels
• Suspension and steering
• Brakes
• Heating and air conditioning
• Engine performance
• Electricity & electronic systems
• Industry standards
• Related automobile operational theory
• Diagnosis and troubleshooting
• Shop safety

Professional Certification opportunities

Certifications offered to students completing the Auto Technology program include:

• National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation Certification (NATEF)
• Maintenance & Light Repair (MLR)

This certification requires instruction for 2 or more semesters to meet 540 hours of specialized training required for program certification in NATEF.

Pre-Requisites

Auto Technology students should have average or better skills in math, reading comprehension and writing. Students should also have a solid attendance record.

High School credit available

Students earn 15 units of elective credit per semester toward their high school graduation.

College prep course.  A-G approved.  Meets area “G” approval for UC and CSU admissions.

Bakersfield College credit available

Auto Technology is articulated with Bakersfield College courses in AUTO B10 Automotive Safety and AUTO B11 Introduction to Auto Technology. Students meeting BC’s established criteria will earn up to 4.5 units of BC credit in addition to the above high school credit.

This is a career awareness class which instructs students on the basics necessary for entry-level employment. Successful Auto Technology students often pursue careers in the following:
